Monday September 6th is Labor Day

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.  In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.  Cleveland was also concerned that aligning an American labor holiday with existing international May Day celebrations would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair.  All 50 U.S. states have made Labor Day a state holiday.  Pictured at right is a photo of a Labor Day parade on Main St. in Buffalo NY in 1900.

The Council must be Proud of their Chief

Shame_-_Head_in_HandsFailure by the City and the Police Department to release public records pertaining to Chief Harris' involvement in the Obama administrations lawsuit challenging SB-1070 has prompted lawsuits by Judicial Watch out of Washington DC,  a conservative, non-partisan educational foundation, that promotes transparency, accountability and integrity in government, politics and the law.

PLEA & APA Testify re: Anti Union Bill

Levi_PhotoPLEA Lobbyist and Consultant Dr. Levi Bolton and APA Executive Director Brian Livingston testified in the Arizona Senate Judiciary Committee to represent the interest of Law Enforcement in the controversial new ballot initiative.  The bill supporters insist that the new initiative's single purpose is to insure that  where local, state or federal law permits or requires an election for employee elections, it shall be by secret ballot.  Both PLEA and the APA support secret ballots, it is the  actual bill language that is problematic and creates potential interpretation issues that may expand entitlements beyond the scope of the crafter's intent.

Why SB 1070 and Border Security are Important

abdullah_al-nafisiOn February 2, 2009, Kuwaiti Professor Abdallah Al-Nafisi addressed a gathering in Bahrain.  His remarks were broadcast by Al Jazeera TV out of Qatar.  The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) captured the video and posted it on their website with a translation of the professors comments.  In his remarks, Professor Nafisi advocates the smuggling of anthrax into the US via the US/Mexico border to be used in an attack on the White House.  He also advocates and prays for the future success of an attack on a nuclear power plant in Michigan.  Videos and commentary such as this make the strongest case for the control of illegal immigration and securing the southen border of the US.
