Monday September 6th is Labor Day

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.  In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.  Cleveland was also concerned that aligning an American labor holiday with existing international May Day celebrations would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair.  All 50 U.S. states have made Labor Day a state holiday.  Pictured at right is a photo of a Labor Day parade on Main St. in Buffalo NY in 1900.

PD Threatens to Investigate Whistleblowing

whistleblower_2PLEA was notified by Sgt. Phil Roberts that after a 3 month leave of absence, his first day back to work on Monday will start with the Department investigating him for misconduct.  One wonders if "whistle-blowing" is misconduct.  PLEA believes it is PPD management's intent to have Sgt. Roberts terminated.  Hopefully we’re wrong.  Senator Russell Pearce is working hard on Sgt. Robert’s behalf.  PLEA believes that employees with information regarding the kidnapping statistics in question are being given orders not to talk to the media about this.

Buckner_Board_Photo_ColorPLEA was informed of and was saddened to learn of the untimely death of Officer John Buckner of the Desert Horizon Precinct during the early morning hours on August 17, 2010.  John died as a result of medical complications sustained following a surgical procedure.  John was a veteran officer with over 30 years of service and was the senior ranking patrol officer on the department.  John was actively involved with PLEA for many years. He was a past PLEA Board member and continued to work as an active PLEA Rep providing advice and assistance to numerous officers over the years. He also served as a member of the department's CISM team.  John's presence will be greatly missed.  PLEA extends heartfelt prayers and sympathy to John's friends and family during this trying and difficult time.

Are the Numbers Inflated?

kidnappingRecent information has surfaced indicating previously reported kidnap statistics for the City of Phoenix may have been greatly exaggerated.  A Phoenix Police Supervisor has authored a memo stating that previously reported numbers of over Three hundred and fifty kidnappings in a one year period are grossly misleading and that the numbers may have been intentionally inflated to assist in securing Federal monies for the City.

Listen Now! to a discussion of the topic on the Mike Broomhead show aired August 16, 2010.
