Council Votes to Approve Payment of $149K for Shooting Study

On July 5th, 2018, at a noon meeting, the Phoenix City Council voted 6-2 to approve the expenditure of 149 thousand dollars in police funds to commission a study by The Police Foundation out of Washington DC spending this to examine why we are having an increase in officer involved shootings.

PLEA voiced opposition to this at a June 13 Public Safety Sub-Committee meeting.  After this meeting, we also sent a letter to the Mayor and Council voicing our opposition to the study and cited reasons why.   For differing reasons,. many community activists also opposed

We also published a web article on why officer involved shooting are on the increase.  Most everyone, regardless of where they stand on the issue, knows a six month study is not going to provide a magic answer that will reduce shootings.  Knowing this, we could probably find better ways to utilize these funds.
