PLEA recently lodged a complaint with the Peace Officer’s Research Association of California (PORAC) which is the entity that provides all PLEA members with Legal Defense Fund (LDF) coverage related to critical incidents and other scope of employment actions that may have criminal ramifications.
On September 21, 2017, the PORAC Board met to review the complaint. Subsequently, the name of Phoenix attorney Steven J. Serbalik was removed from the list of attorneys on the PORAC LDF panel of attorneys.
Officers who might be involved in future critical incidents must be mindful that the cost of legal coverage is covered only when using an approved PORAC LDF attorney. When PLEA is notified of a critical incident, we automatically roll an approved LDF attorney to the scene. Officers involved in critical incidents who wish to use an attorney of their own choosing may do so but, are also fully responsible for any legal fees incurred. PLEA will not cover or reimburse fees for non-LDF attorneys with regard to critical incidents.
