Officer Travis Murphy’s Killer Sentenced to Life

On Friday, May 6, 2017,  almost six years since he was shot and killed in the line of duty, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Teresa Sanders sentenced Travis Murphy’s killer to life in prison without parole.

On May 26, 2010, Officer Murphy and his partner were in the area of 19th Avenue and Fairmount Avenue investigating a suspicious vehicle, which had been placed under a tarp at an abandoned house after officers from the neighboring precinct broadcast that shots were fired from it.  Officer Murphy and was ambushed by the suspect, who was armed with a rifle.  Despite heroic efforts to save his life, he died after being transported to Saint Joseph’s Hospital.

Officer Murphy’s killer was also sentenced to an additional consecutive term totaling 65.75 years for other offenses related to the incident.
