PLEA Attends 2017 Annual NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner

On Friday, April 21, 2017, members of the PLEA board attended the annual NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner held at the Phoenix downtown Hyatt Regency hotel.  PLEA sees the value of cultivating partnerships within the community we serve and has supported this annual event for the last several years.

The theme of this years event was “It Continues” referring to the ever present need to continue fighting for and protecting the civil rights of everyone.  This years keynote speaker was Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams.  Chief Williams explained the need for the community to be patient when police use of force incidents occur.  A complete thorough investigation allows for the most accurate information to be released when the time comes.  She also empathized with the communities desire for quick information during times of crisis.

Chief Williams also challenged the community on multiple levels.

  1. Get engaged. Don’t just sit on the side lines or complain
  2. Answer the call. Step up to serve as an officer on a board or neighborhood watch.
  3. It takes a village. Everyone in the community needs to step up to to be involved in raising our youth. Don’t be afraid to tell kids when they are doing something wrong. Be a mentor and a role model.
