PLEA Meets with Mayor Stanton

On January 5, 2017 PLEA contacted Mayor Stanton and asked for a meeting.  The Mayor adjusted his schedule on short notice and stopped by the PLEA office to meet PLEA Board members Ken Crane and Mike “Britt” London.

This was the first we had spoken with the Mayor since the press conference on December 5th.  Mayor Stanton listened as we laid out our concerns over the current state of affairs with the staffing of the PD.  We explained that the national average with regard to staffing ratios for cities with a population over 250,000 persons is 2.5 officers per 1000 citizens.  Using this ratio, a city the size of Phoenix would be staffed with 4,250 officers.

The Mayor was very receptive to our concerns and we made it clear that the staffing issue is urgent and that PLEA will keep it in the forefront until resolved.  We are greatly appreciative of Mayor Stanton’s willingness to make time available for us and listening to our concerns.

PLEA also met with Councilwoman Laura Pastor last Friday to express concerns and share information on the same issues.

We will be meeting with other council members in the coming days and will keep the membership appraised as information develops.
