PLEA would like to thank everyone who exercised their Constitutional right to vote on Election Day, especially those who voted against Proposition 487. Thanks to the combined efforts of our counterparts at United Phoenix Firefighters, AFSCME Local 2384, AFSCME Local 2960, and the numerous volunteers including family members, friends, and our Community Partners who offered to walk neighborhoods and educate the public, a grass roots effort defeated what was funded and pushed by dark money and out of state interests. Keep in mind that this victory, while huge, is temporary, as there will be continued attacks on our pensions, wages, and other benefits.
The citizens of Phoenix voted for pension reform in 2013, but we must all work together to seek ways to improve the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System, [PSPRS] as well as the City of Phoenix Personnel Retirement System [COPERS] to ensure that costs remain affordable and reasonable and to improve their health and sustainability.
We will also have our work cut out for us in the upcoming session at the State Legislature, which is why we rely on our lobbyist, Mike Williams and Associates and Retired Phoenix Police Officer Levi Bolton, current Director of the Arizona Police Association, to keep track of proposed legislation which affects our members, other peace officers, as well as the citizens we protect and serve.
