After years of imploring the Department to allow officers to privately purchase and use their own rifles for patrol use the department has finally begun the long awaited implementation of private purchase patrol rifles. Under a program just begun, 10 officers have been given the green light to trade in their city rifles and qualify with their personally owned rifles. This in turn will allow the Department to re-issue the city rifles to additional officers. In a recent survey conducted by the department, approximately 150 officers expressed a desire to participate in this program.
