On Thursday, July 28, 2011, representatives from PLEA met with Chiefs Yahner and McClelland regarding the issue of patrol officers being able to wear a police placard on the back of the outer vest carrier when worn with the class D uniform. Chief Yahner ultimately agreed that use of the placards would be permissible under the following conditions:
- Wear of the placard would be optional.
- Only for use on the outer vest carrier when worn with the class D uniform.
- Only to be worn on the back of the vest carrier (front placards are not approved).
PLEA has been involved in much discussion and debate for the last three years in order for officers to be able to have a police identifier worn on the back of the outer vest carrier in order to enhance safety and visibility. We would like to thank Chiefs Yahner and McClelland for their consideration and approval of, what many feel to be, an important piece of equipment.
