On February 7, 2012, News 5 provided continuing coverage re: an ongoing investigation into the department’s Child Crimes Unit. Many factors to include understaffing, excessively heavy caseloads, lack of Spanish speaking detectives, improper case management, pressure to bring cases to conclusion, and lack of proper management oversight all combined to create the situation we now find ourselves in. Hundreds, if not thousands of cases going back to the 1990’s were potentially compromised and are under review by the department. Chief Yahner was the Lt. in charge of the unit during a portion of the time frame that the unit was under investigation.
