On Tuesday, April 28, 2009, the PLEA Board attended the Public Safety Sub-committee Meeting held at the City Hall building.
PLEA intended to deliver a prepared statement to the Sub-committee enumerating numerous concerns with the current state of affairs on the Police Department.
PLEA in it’s prepared statement also asked the City Council to simply follow the City Ordinance by giving us a Police Chief as specified by law.
In addition to the PLEA Board, the meeting was also attended by numerous citizens, numerous media outlets, and as well as other Public Safety Officials.
After waiting for over two hours to be heard, The PLEA Board was prepared to address the Public Safety Sub-Committee but was unable to do so when Committee Chair Claude Mattox stated that PLEA’s concerns centered around personnel issues which would have to be taken up directly with City Manager Frank Fairbanks. Councilman Mattox then abruptly adjourned the meeting even though other citizens wished to be heard.
The PLEA Board then met with the media for a brief press conference in front of the City Hall building in order to openly state concerns on behalf of the membership.
PLEA along with it’s legal counsel belives that Councilman Mattox violated the states open meeting law and is proceeding accordingly.
PLEA is in the process of scheduling a meeting with City Manager Frank Fairbanks to address issues that are negatively impacting our members.
