United In Tragedy, A Community Responds

On Sunday, May 19, 2013, the City of Phoenix and its Police and Fire Departments were rocked by the tragic deaths of two first responders.

Police Officer Daryl Raetz, a six year veteran, was killed by a hit and run driver while conducting a DUI investigation and Firefighter Bradley Harper, a two year veteran, died from injuries he received while working a fire scene the previous day.

The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association and the United Phoenix Firefighters initially came together to host a benefit barbecue to raise money for the families of Officer Raetz and Firefighter Harper.  However, when it was determined that a larger venue than what either association had available was needed, that’s when the community stepped up to the plate.

A special thanks goes out to the staff of the Sheraton Crescent Hotel for hosting the barbecue.  In addition to providing the shaded outdoor reception space, they also provided the indoor ballroom, as well as assistance from their kitchen staff to help with cooking when the crew from Phoenix Fire working the grills couldn’t keep up with demand.

We also thank Mayor Greg Stanton, Community Activist Anne Malone of Citizens for Phoenix, the numerous Phoenix Police Officers and Firefighters, as well as other Valley law enforcement agencies and fire departments, family members, friends, and numerous citizens who came out to show their support.  Your generous contributions amounted to over $100,000, which will go directly to the families of Officer Raetz and Firefighter Harper.
