Retirees’ Corner

The Retirees’ Corner is dedicated to those who served proudly as Phoenix police officers protecting their community. This section includes important benefits, general information and news and events.

The following was written by Detective Joyce Hubler, who retired out of the Homicide Detail in 1996. Joyce’s first assignment was Shift 1 Patrol in the old Tower Plaza Station with Gordy Lange and several other officers who were forming the association that eventually became PLEA. Joyce immediately became a PLEA member and also served six terms as a trustee. Joyce authors the Retiree’s Corner, which has been published in the Phoenix Law Enforcer since November 2013.

As retirees, we left the building, collected our pensions and faded into the sunset. Oftentimes we remember the job and the deep bonds we had with most of our squad members and partners. There are times we miss them, even more than we miss the job. A Facebook group, Retired Phoenix Police Officers and Dispatchers, was formed on July 6, 2013. It became apparent almost ALL of us have missed out on the close bonds we once had, as the group grew to over 500 members almost overnight and is still growing. There are many ways we can help one another. I have met with representatives of the Phoenix Police Department, PLEA and the 100 Club, and am trying to form bonds that would allow us to help one another where help is requested. As we age, some no longer drive. Yet there are many of us who would gladly volunteer to help out another retiree. There are many ways we can help one another, and I thank PLEA and the Department for affording us the opportunity to make a beginning for retirees. Retiring should not be an ending. It can be a beginning.
